Heartburn? Take an antacid right??

Pretty typical scenario… You’re experiencing heartburn. Often purchased over-the-counter or prescribed by a physician; it’s often suggested to take a proton pump inhibitor such as Prilosec, Zantac, Tagament. Decrease the amount of acid and you’ll start feeling better. That’s good right?!

Not really

Taking these medications has been shown to INCREASE your risk of kidney disease, dementia, heart disease and premature death.

In reality, true excessive amounts of acid in your stomach is rare. The most COMMON reason for feeling heartburn are 1) not enough stomach acid 2) Helicobacter pylori imbalance 3) Hiatal hernia and 4) food allergies.

Why are we taking these medications then?

The most important first step? Seek advice from your healthcare provider as to properly wean the medication from your body. Stopping “cold-turkey” can increase the sensation of heartburn.

Address heartburn sensation without medication. Eat nutrient dense, organic food, fermented foods (homemade sauerkraut) and quality supplements for healthy gut flora.
